DIY Ice Cream Mix-In Party

It has been really hot this summer, and I don't know about you, but I have definitely been craving ice cream. And as my kids are always in the mood for ice cream, even during a blizzard in the winter, they have also been wanting ice cream all week. So, I guess ice cream is on the menu, but let's do it a little differently. Let's make a DIY ice cream mix-in party!

Over the past year, we have enjoyed going to special ice cream stores where they add mix-ins to your ice cream. We have also done activities like this in a certain popular ice cream brand's factory experience. So this week, we turned an afternoon snack into an extra fun activity, and you can do this at home with your kids too.

To start, buy your base ice cream. Vanilla is the perfect base, but if you have chocolate lovers, you can use that one too. Allow the ice cream to sit on the counter for 5 minutes before you start the activity so it will be soft enough to stir.

Next, make sure you get lots of delicious and interesting mix-ins. Some examples include chopped nuts, chocolate chips, M&Ms, chopped pretzels, sprinkles, gummy candies, chopped candy bars, broken ice cream cone pieces, and anything else that sounds like it might be delicious mixed into your ice cream. Set these up on a tray or in bowls so that everyone can choose what they want to add to their ice cream.

Time to find sauces, flavors, and syrups to add to your ice cream. Think peanut butter, chocolate fudge, syrups you add to your coffees, and caramel. Set these out as well.

Now, you can give each kid a bowl and a starter scoop of whichever flavor of ice cream they prefer. Then send them along, adding mix-ins (you can place a limit, i.e. only 3 types, or only 1 spoonful, etc) and then adding any sauces and syrups. The only thing left to do is for each person to stir up their ice cream and see if they made the best ice cream flavor ever!

And with only a little cleaning up (don't forget to hide your favorite mix-in extras where your kids won't find them), and for a lot less money, you will have put together a great summer activity that your kids will absolutely enjoy.
