I am not one to throw away usable items. If it is still working, I keep using it. I hate wasting money and I also hate wasting things. So, when my laptop, the one I do all of my work on, began to send me little hints about its age, I tried my best to take care of it and make sure it kept working.
Over the past year, my lovely laptop had become slow and sluggish. The keyboard was less responsive, the touchpad was worn, causing my curser to jump everywhere. But my laptop and I went all the way back to the beginning of my computer-drawn-kitchen adventures. I remember it as such a bold and impressive machine, with its touch-screen and its powerful processors that helped bring my 3-D kitchens to life. I did everything that Google and I could think of to help rejuvenate it. I defragmented, I scanned, I disk cleaned. At last, it became apparent that its only chance at revival was to upgrade the operating software. But alas, that laptop from 2016, despite its powerful core, was not upgradeable. And so, I finally was forced to admit defeat. My old computer would be relegated to non-work usage around the house and I would be purchasing a new, way-too-expensive work laptop to replace it. And along with that would be new and updated design software.
After what felt like a fortune, my new gaming laptop (the only type that can really handle generating the 3-D designs) arrived. I upgraded to the more advanced, current version of my design software and began the uphill task of transferring all of my important data from one pc to the other. Finally, the moment arrived. I opened my design software on my new computer to work on a project that I am in the middle of. And there it was. That blissful moment, so similar to a certain moment back in 2016, when I realized that my work would be just so much easier and less time consuming with this new machine. Much in the same way as how difficult it can be to get rid of your favorite old frying pan, but then the first time you use your new pan you remember how amazing your old pan used to be but isn’t anymore.
So here I am, happily typing on my new, beautiful laptop, simultaneously appreciating how smooth the new keyboard is and what good, hard work my old laptop did for me for all of those years. And remembering that while it is usually best to keep using usable things, sometimes you have to get rid of the old and move forward with the new. May my new laptop last many years so I don’t have to replace it for a long time!
